In South Africa, the legal classification of an electric bike depends on its power and speed. This distinction is crucial as it determines whether you need a license to ride. The law creates two main categories, each with its own set of rules. This guide is designed to help you quickly understand where your e-bike fits and what you need to do to comply with the law. Legally a Bicycle
Your e-bike is treated like a standard bicycle if it meets ALL of these requirements.

250W Max Power: The motor has a maximum continuous power output of 250 watts.

25 km/h Speed Limit: Motor assistance cuts off at or before 25 km/h.

Pedal-Assist: Primarily propelled by pedaling.

Under 40kg: The bike generally should not exceed 40 kg in weight.
Requirements:
✓ No driver's license needed.
✓ No vehicle registration required.
Legally a Motor Vehicle
Your e-bike is classified as a motor vehicle if it can operate above this speed.

> 45 km/h Max Speed: Capable of operating in excess of 45 km/h.

✗ Driver's license required (e.g., motorbike license).
