Kalahari Meerkat e-bike Project.

In 2017, the University of Zurich asked us to build an electric fat bike for their KMP (Kalahari Meerkat Project) in the Kalahari desert, we assembled our team and started building a durable e-fat bike.

In the Kalahari, temperatures vary greatly - between 36°C (100°F) in the day to 10°C (50°F) at night. The desert has a powder-like sand that gets into every little nook and cranny of the frame and mechanics of a bike.

Due to the vast distances Researchers need to travel, KMP uses the electric bikes for their Meerkat field trips - to get to and from base camp.

Working closely with their team and after trial and error, we learnt a lot about how to build and prepare e-bikes for the Kalahari durable enough to withstand such harsh conditions.

In January 2021, we had the fortunate opportunity of building a new fleet of electric fat bikes for their researchers.

Anti-Poaching e-bike Project.

The challenge: Find the most powerful mid drive motor system we can and then ensure that the e-bike components can ensure an output of immense torque and speed that is required to be an effective anti-poaching electric bike.

Our anti-poaching project involves the development of motors and systems that help combat anti-poaching in the Sub-Sahara region.

Google Gauteng using E-bikes for running errands

In 2015, As part of the green movement, contribution to zero-emission forms of transport and in support of a growing trend in cities to commute by bicycle, Google Johannesburg invested in 2 electric bikes from Chilled Squirrel. Google's members of staff at its JHB Offices are able to use the hybrid e-bikes to zip around town to run errands.
